Menopause

Menopause is a natural process in the female body that is characterized by the decrease of estrogen (female hormone) production in the ovaries. Besides that this hormone plays a key role in the regulation of the reproductive system, it has an influence on the cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive systems, as well as on metabolism, osteogenesis, skin and hair health, and muscles.

Variability of the prevailing symptoms during this period can be explained by heredity, lifestyle, bad health habits, as well as by the constitutional peculiarities of the female body. In the most cases, women experience hot flashes accompanied by skin redness in the area of face, neck, and chest, excessive sweating followed by the shiver, fatigue, sudden mood swings, headache, dryness of the mucous membrane of the vagina, diminished libido, sleep disturbances, and even depression. The decrease of estrogen production raises up the risk of bone loss (osteoporosis) and cardiovascular diseases.

Menopause hormone therapy (MHT) was considered the most effective treatment for a long time, until its negative side effects on the cardiovascular system and breast were proven by American and British scientists in the early 2000s. Besides that in patients taking estrogen-containing drugs, I often observe a lack of vitamin B complex, magnesium, and zinc. In my practice, the complex approach to symptoms improvement and prevention of the specific diseases in women during the menopause is based on 3 lines: bioactive additives, herbal mixtures, and recommendations for nutrition and lifestyle.

The bioactive additives are specialized and well-balanced multivitamin and mineral formulas that include vitamins of B complex, C and E vitamins, folic acid, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and others, as well as medications containing phytonutrients: isoflavones, red clover isoflavones, and Korean red ginseng. Isoflavones, due to their chemical structure and influence on the female body, are one of the most effective drugs to minimize symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and excessive sweating.

The balanced formulas of oils for women that include fatty acids (e.g., omega-3) also can be used. The two most important types of omega-3 fatty acids are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). EPA provides an anti-inflammatory effect, maintains normal heart performance and blood lipid profile, it is also recommended in hypertension.

DHA plays an important role in the brain maintaining retentiveness of memory and vision acuity; and, as well as EPA, it provides anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular effects.

The greatest source of omega-3 fatty acids is not only fish oil and plankton organisms, but also many plants such as Evening Primrose and Schizochytrium microalgae.

The formulas of the oils comprise linseed oil with lignans, Evening Primrose oil, and oil derived from Pomegranate seeds and ground flowers of Meadow Clover.

Organic herbal mixtures, both for brewing and for other administration modes as extractions, have 3 main functions: harmonizing, roborant, and symptoms relieving. These mixtures consist of leaves and flowers of such plants as Sage, Black Cohosh, Saint-John's-Wort, Meadow Clover, Lady's-Mantle, Balm, Rosemary, Lavender, Hop, Thousand-Leaf, Lemon Verbena, and many others. These herbs perfectly complement each other in the therapeutic effect and they also have pleasant smell and taste. Improvement of the hot flashes and other typical symptoms mentioned above is observed, usually, in two weeks after the beginning of the therapy.

The full course duration is at least 3 months.
